Fairmount Bagel Bakery is one of Montreal’s iconic eateries, as well known for its fresh bagels as Schwartz’s Deli is for its smoked meat. Fairmount is run and lovingly tended by the descendants of Isadore Shlafman who founded the bakery 90 years ago. Using a secret recipe and age-old equipment, Fairmount supplies Montreal’s citizens and visitors with what many swear to be the best bagels in the world.

History

As a new immigrant to Montreal in 1919, the young and ambitious Isadore Shlafman set about creating the city's first bagel bakery off Saint Lawrence Boulevard. Thirty years later, unable to meet the growing demand for his delicious bagels out of the current premises, Shlafman purchased a cottage on Fairmount Street and turned the place into a joint bakery/house for himself and his family. Shlafman's son, Jack, soon learned the trade of rolling the bagels by hand and baking them in authentic wood ovens, and joined his father to create the Original Fairmount Bagel Bakery. Today, the business is still run by Isadore Shlafman's descendants, who maintain strict control over the standards that were originally set.

What makes the bagels produced by Fairmount Bagel Bakery so unique is the fact that the same methods used to make them so many years ago are still employed today. By rolling the dough by hand and baking them in the original wooden ovens, Fairmount guarantees its customers a culinary experience quite unlike anything they have ever tried.

What's on the Menu?

Fairmount Bagel Bakery offers a wide range of bagel options with or without toppings. Its original bagels, with sesame seed, poppy seed or plain are by far this bakery's biggest sellers, and are made with unbleached flour. Other options available for those looking for something a little different include bagels made with caraway seed, onion or garlic. Fairmount makes bagels with a healthy twist, such as its famous organic whole wheat flour Flax Seed Bagel, its Chocolate Chip Bagel or its more savory Pesto and Black Olive Bagel. Also on offer are New York style pretzels. Customers get to eat their bagels plain or with the classic cream cheese and/or salmon topping.

Services

In keeping up with tradition, Fairmount Bagel Bakery offers a take away service only, which is open seven days a week, throughout the year, including Jewish holidays. The bakery operates 24 hours a day and is the perfect place to grab something tasty and filling any time of the day or night while in Montreal. Customers can also make orders to have bagels delivered to their homes or offices.
