Montreal Biodome

Montreal’s Biodome is a unique eco-museum, offering a quiet oasis in the middle of a bustling city for visitors to take time out and soak up the wonders of nature. The aim of the museum is to provide visitors with the chance to experience, in a multi-sensory way, the “live collections” that make up this wonderful location in the form of different eco-systems represented in the most authentic way possible. Here, visitors can step from the cold and ice of the Antarctica, to the lush tropics within minutes, enjoying the sights, smell, sounds and even temperature of each wonderful world. Montreal Biodome is also known as Biodôme de Montréal.

The Laurentian Forest

The Biodome houses a 1,518 square foot ‘sample’ of Quebec’s native Laurentian Forest. Here, visitors can enjoy trees of hardwood and conifers, and a wide variety of both land and aquatic animals. Those who come back to this ‘exhibition’ at different times during the year can watch the seasons changing and the cycle of life from up close.

The Arctic

While there is no natural vegetation in the Arctic exhibition at the Biodome, visitors can nevertheless get a feel for the temperature and sights of the cold, icy world to the North of North America. This zone is represented by a rocky stretch of coastline, complete with steep cliffs, and populated by around 60 alcids, mainly Atlantic puffins, black guillemots and common murres.

The Tropical Forest

This 'exhibition' highlights the vulnerability of the South American rain forests and shows visitors the intricate biological diversity of the ecosystems that make up forests such as these. Covering over 2,600 square meters of space, the Tropical Forest at the Biodome is the museum's pride and joy and is populated by thousands of animals and plants. Waterfalls, secret caves, humidity and the sound of songbird, all provide visitors with perhaps their only chance in life to experience a tropical rain forest from up close.

St. Lawrence Marine Ecosystem

Covering 1,620 square meters and featuring over 2 million liters of reproduced seawater, the St. Lawrence Marine Ecosystem offers viewers a unique peep into the wonders of the undersea world. Here, visitors can view an underwater observatory with hundreds of fish and then continue down a path that will show them a number of different landscapes – steep, rocky walls which make a perfect nesting spot for seabirds, a saltwater marsh and so on.

Events

The Montreal Biodome regularly runs different events during the year to make visitors more aware of the changing seasons and different spots on earth. In addition, the museum also presents shows on special themes, relating to ecosystems.

Montreal Biodome

The Montreal Biodome appeals to visitors of all ages and provides a unique opportunity to step away from the fast paced world that we find ourselves in today and put ourselves physically in perspective of where we stand in the wonderful cycle of life. This museum is different to all others in that it celebrates life and does its utmost to preserve a sadly dwindling population of animals and plants from all over the world.
