History
After Montreal was chosen to host the Winter Olympics, work began to construct the stadium that would open the games. Designed by the daring architect, Roger Taillibert, the park was designed in the shape of a giant seashell, with a 175-meter inhabitable mast towering over it. Work on the stadium was sporadic as labor relations became tense on the site, and it was only after the government- appointed Regie des Installations Olympiques (RIO) stepped in, did work assume in full force. After a nail-biting eight months, construction on the stadium was complete, with the last rolls of grass being laid exactly one day before the grand opening on July 16th, 1976! Today, the Olympic Park is used as a trade and entertainment venue, and its new sports complex boast some of the best facilities in the world. |
