Schwartz's Deli

Schwartz’s Montreal Hebrew Delicatessen, fondly known as Schwartz’s Deli among locals, is an iconic eatery in the city of Montreal. Situated on the historic Boulevard Saint-Laurent Street, Schwartz’s Deli has been providing city dwellers and locals with the highest quality of food for the past eighty years. With the reputation of being the oldest delicatessen in Canada, Schwartz’s Deli respects its heritage yet continuously strives to keep up to date with its clients’ tastes and needs.

History

Schwartz's Deli was founded by a Jewish immigrant from Romania, Reuben Schwartz in 1928. Since then, the delicatessen has remained at its original location on Saint-Laurent Street, providing visitors with an authentic look at historic Montreal among the chic and trendy stores surrounding the shop.

The Secret of Success

Schwartz's Deli is particularly proud of its dedication to the traditional recipe that it uses to smoke the meats for which the store is so famous for worldwide. While other smoked meat companies use preservatives and other chemicals to make their meat, Schwartz guarantees the use of only fresh spices, which lovingly marinades the meat for ten full days before it is smoked. As a result, Schwartz's Deli has gained a reputation for preservative-free, fresh meat on a daily basis and has gone on to win numerous awards for its standard.

Popularity

It is not uncommon to see a long line of patient customers queuing outside Schwartz's Deli, day and night, in order to get in and taste the delicious meats and steaks offered by the establishment. The delicatessen has gained national and international fame, and has even been the subject of a book (Schwartz's Hebrew Delicatessen: The Story; Bill Brownstein). Schwartz's Deli is regularly visited by celebrities such as Celine Dion, Angelina Jolie, Jerry Lewis and Tim Allen. So popular has Schwartz's become, that several iconic restaurateurs have approached the owners to consider a franchise deal, only to be turned down politely but firmly.

Services

Customers who opt to eat in the restaurant enter a single, white tiled room decorated with newspaper clippings about Schwartz's long and colorful history. A bar alongside regular tables gives Schwartz's Deli the ambience of a classical 70's diner. The meat is served piled high on platters alongside thick slices of authentic rye bread and is accompanied by side orders of pickles, coleslaw or French fries. In the summer of 2008, Schwartz's opened a separate take-out section in the premises next door. The restaurant also offers a catering service that supplies its delicious products to functions.

Schwartz's Deli

It is not difficult to understand why Schwartz’s Deli has developed a legendary reputation in Montreal and the rest of the world. Besides its mouth watering products and secret spice recipe, which makes visiting the deli a good reason in itself, Schwartz’s has remained true to its heritage, using only the best ingredients and absolutely no preservatives in the same way that the meat was prepared by Reuben Schwartz so many years ago. For a truly memorable eating experience, a visit to Schwartz’s Deli should not be missed.
